Delbert Duane DeRees, age 85, a resident of Romeo since 1978, previously from Shelby Township, Lake Orion and Battle Creek, Mi., passed away on Wednesday March 3, 2021 at Wellbridge Nursing facility in Romeo. Delbert was born May 29, 1935 in Bellevue, Michigan, the son of Duane Eldro and Marjorie Delberta (Owen) DeRees. Del graduated from Battle Creek Central High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, medley relay team, an MC for the all-school talent show, and he played trumpet in concert band, marching band and stage band. He also competed in square dance competitions, winning locally and in Chicago. Del was voted “Most Original” in his class. After graduating in 1953, Del was accepted at General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) where he earned his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree. On August 18, 1956, Delbert married Florence Ann Nightingale at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. Florence preceded him in death on February 2, 2021 after celebrating 64 years of marriage. Del first worked as an engineer for Fisher Body at the GM Tech Center in Warren. Then, he spent several years in advanced body design for American Motors, Jeep and finally Chrysler. Delbert was awarded many patents for his innovative designs. He was an avid automotive industry historian, antique car enthusiast and member of many antique & classic car clubs. He was a dedicated member of the Pierce Arrow Society and served as Michigan, Regional & National President. Delbert was elected to a position on the Romeo Village Council and was a member of the Romeo Historical Society. He remained active with the Verona School Alumni in Battle Creek. His other hobbies included journaling, writing poetry, collecting old cook books and Haviland China. He especially enjoyed the writing of Edgar Allen Poe and Edgar Guest. Del loved spending time with Florence and his family. Survived by his children: David Owen (Michelle) DeRees, Stephen Ernest (Sharon) DeRees, and Julia Ann (DeRees) (Brian) Cunningham and grandchildren Kaitlin DeRees (Eric Attard), Ali DeRees (Scott Wolchek), Rosie Cunningham (Joe McCartney), Kelly DeRees, Annie Cunningham & Jacob DeRees. Also survived by great-grandson Henry DeRees-Attard. Delbert was predeceased by his parents Duane Eldro and Marjorie Delberta (Owen) DeRees, and brother Robert (the late C.J.). Funeral services on Saturday, March 6, 2021 are private with burial to follow at Romeo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider the American Heart Association.
