Arlone M. Rowland

June 28, 1924 — September 7, 2022

Arlone Rowland of Almont, Michigan passed away in her sleep at Angelica’s Place in Romeo, on September 7, 2022. Arlone was born on June 28, 1924 in Elkton, Michigan (Huron County) to parents Otto and Emma Elsesser. She graduated from Elkton High School in 1943.On June 23, 1950, she married Lloyd H. Rowland of Elkton, Michigan. They remained married for over 72 years until her death. Together they had daughters Shirley Ann (Beltz) of Romeo, Sherry Marie (Nowakowski) of Rochester Hills, and Lee Ann (Rice) of Almont. They lived in East Detroit, Michigan from 1950 until 2010, when they relocated to Almont.

Being the generous and gracious wife, in 1978 she assisted husband Lloyd with meal-planning and logistics as he made a trans-Atlantic solo sailing voyage to Ireland. A year later, she surprised everyone by joining him in Ireland, where they visited his new-found friends and toured the country.

She was Lloyd’s business partner in managing “Music Systems” where they refurbished and installed juke boxes. There she handled all the business activity, as a bookkeeper, financial secretary and administrative assistant - writing checks, paying the bills and physically, rebuilding the juke boxes.

Arlone and Lloyd also enjoyed a cottage they owned in Lexington, Michigan, where the kids and grand-kids would come to visit, enjoy Lake Huron and the solitude of the yard. Often, this included games, campfires, and even bird-watching. Not least of all – a lot of good eating. Arlone was a good cook – as evidenced by all those she fed, including prospective sons-in-law who never stopped eating.

In her free time, she loved to knit and passed that hobby on to her daughters. Even as she struggled with her eyesight, she continued to knit washcloths, slippers and afghans to keep her family warm.

Most of all, Arlone took pride when gathering with family to note her most important accomplishment – being a mother, grand-mother, and great-grandmother. She was a “quiet” mom who taught her daughters how to be mothers themselves (to grand-children Barry, Carin and Gregory) and even to their pets (cats and dogs). Carin and Jonathan had great-granddaughter Ellery; Gregory and Lauren then had Rosalynn, Jacob and Scarlett. She was always excited to see them and to hear of their accomplishments. In seeing her entire clan together, she would proudly remark: “I am responsible for all of this”.

Arlone is predeceased by her first husband Paul Tschumi and her siblings John Elsesser, Robert Elsesser, Donald Elsesser, Eleanor Dejonghe, and Dorothy Elsesser.
