In Loving Memory of Eva Sandberg

Eva Sandberg of Sterling Heights, Michigan, passed peacefully on April 11, 2026, surrounded by a care team that loved her dearly.

87 years old, Eva was predeceased by her husband, Richard Sandberg, with whom she shared 38 years of marriage before his passing in 1997.

Eva’s faith in the Lord was strong, and she mirrored His love to everyone around her. Her smile warmed our hearts! Her favorite quotes included “Keep on keeping on”, “Keep it simple”, and “Don’t sweat the small stuff”. Her endurance, laughter, humor, sass, intelligence, and discernment will be greatly missed.

Born in Berlin, Germany, on September 23, 1938, Eva experienced WWII as a child. She witnessed the tragedies of war firsthand and grew to be resilient, overcoming many of life’s obstacles and trials with fortitude. She was a joy to her mother, Hertha Sass, who taught Eva gratitude and instilled an uncomplaining spirit; she was well loved by her aunts Hilde, Elizabeth, and Elli; adored by her uncles Walter, Heinz, and Fritz; and is survived by her cousin, Jochen Schmidt, whom she loved like a brother.

Early in life, Eva worked as a sales associate at Winkelman’s Department Store in Detroit, Michigan. Later, she took a position on the line at General Motors. After retirement, Eva stayed busy volunteering with the American Red Cross and at the Utica Public Library where she enjoyed working with her dear friends Kathy and Mary.

Beyond volunteering, Eva gave freely of her time and assisted Dr. Robert and Gloria Lee with their preparations for several Christian mission trips to Central America where the Good News was successfully shared.

Eva loved animals and had a deep compassion for dogs, caring for her own: Dinah, Bozo, Crisis, and Schwartzie. She also enjoyed traveling with her mother Hertha and later with her friend Carolyn Paul on many Romeo Community Senior Trips.

Most recently, Eva was surrounded by her caregivers and nurses at Orchard Grove Senior Living in Romeo, Michigan. She enjoyed visiting with the people there, drinking coffee, eating cake “kuchen”, and taking strolls on sunny days to enjoy the fresh air and flowers. Through her stay, she repeatedly overcame life-threatening health issues and always continued to love life despite the ups and downs. Her care team loved her as they would a close friend, mom, or grandmother. It was an honor, joy, and privilege to care for Eva! She will be greatly missed.

We praise God for Eva, and the life she lived! And we take comfort in knowing that Eva has received the ultimate reward of eternal life in heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
