James A. Malczewski

James Malczewski passed away on December 29, 2021, at age 88 in Romeo, Michigan. He was born on August 1, 1933 in Detroit to Walter and Mary (Patelczik) Malczewski. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings – Leonard, Virginia, Leona, Dorothy, Charlotte, Marion, Irene, Walter, Bernadette, Thomas, Barbara, Richard, Daniel, Frank, John, Paul, and Tom Copeland. Jim’s legacy includes his incredible dedication to his family, work, and community. Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (D’Hondt) Malczewski, his children Maureen (Chuck), Connie (Dave), Joan (Richard), Matthew (Jill), and Jim (Kerry). He was the loving and fun grandfather to Jim, Amy, Branden, Suzy, Shannon, Samantha, Matthew, Sydney, Eero, Luke, Zora, Eli, Reily, Layne, Austen, Alyson, and Madelyn and great grandfather of Lily, Tyler, Dylan, Otis, Wren, Landon, Emma, Sloan, Laila, and Charli. Jim was deeply committed to his work as an officer of the Michigan State Police beginning in 1957 and retired from service at the rank of detective sergeant. The Saginaw News recognized his renown with a 1981 full-page article that described him as an “intensive, dedicated officer.” While he brought to the work a strong sense of justice, he was also known for his compassionate dedication to helping adolescents. Jim was active in his church and his community. He was a member of the St. Christopher’s Church Men’s Club in Bridgeport, Michigan, the Knights of Columbus, the Bridgeport-Spaulding Athletic Association, the Michigan State Police Trooper’s Association, a past president of the Bridgeport Township Recreation Association, and a devoted parent at school athletic events. He was an incredible athlete who played on numerous sports teams. He was an avid consumer of the news. Family and friends enjoyed his great sense of humor. There are no immediate plans for a funeral service and the family will plan for a memorial at a future date.
