Leon Vanmoen

March 28, 1948 — January 13, 2024

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Leon VanMoen passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, January 13,2024. Leon was born in Highland Park Michigan, on March 28, 1948, son of Leon and Margarete VanMoen Sr. He was able to leave this Earth holding the hand of his loving wife and surrounded by all his children, their spouses and all seven grandchildren.

Leon graduated from Utica High School in 1966. Following high school, he immediately entered the United States Army serving in The Vietnam War, obtaining the rank of Sergent. After leaving the service he began a short career in real estate. Realizing this was not a career for him he explored insurance sales. During his 35 plus years working as an insurance agent with Farm Bureau Insurance Leon developed many wonderful relationships with his clients whom he also referred to as friends. Helping those in the Romeo community was very important to Leon. As a member of the Romeo Area Kiwanis for many years he touched so many lives through his work with their community outreach programs. Leon was able to retire at a young age, ultimately moving north to Rose City, where he found a more relaxed pace of life. Turning into snowbirds, Leon and Lois made several trips during the winter months to Florida, Arizona but ultimately fell in love with Gulf Shores Alabama.

Leon enjoyed all the things outdoors. During summer months you would find the VanMoen family camping. Spending many long weekends at Lake Chemung or on Sage Lake. In the crisp fall months Leon looked forward to the guys’ trips up north deer hunting. In the beginning these trips were made with friends and as the years went on, he was joined by his children Keith, Scott, Jonathan and even his son-in-law Dennis. These were a true “guys trip” which included many stories and of course the wonderful meals that Leon so looked forward to. Then came the cold winter months which brought snowmobiling. A true lover of the Polaris machine, Leon so enjoyed the trips to the Upper Peninsula with the boys. This is a tradition which will continue with all the boys and grandsons enjoying the chase of fresh snow.

Leon married Lois Nichols on June14,1968 Everyone would say Lois is the most kind and patient women. Those who knew Leon knew he could be a little difficult to live with. Together they created a beautiful loving family with four children. Stacy (Dennis) Ahrens of Bruce Township, Keith (LeAnn) VanMoen of Armada, Scott (Kelly) VanMoen of Sterling Heights, and Jonathan VanMoen of Romeo. The absolute joy of Leon’s world were his seven grandchildren Sydney and Noah Ahrens, Tyler, Isabella and Blake VanMoen, Lennox and Maddix VanMoen.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Margarete VanMoen, and his sister Helen (Arthur) Vandenbussche.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to St, Jude Childrens Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 10-1, with the funeral service beginning at 1pm at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home in Romeo, Mi.
