Paul J. Schaefer, age 81 a long time resident of Sterling Heights, passed away on Thursday July 30,2026 at his home surrounded by his family. Paul was born May 15,1945 in Grosse Pointe Farms and grew up in Romeo,. He was the son of Joseph and Delores (Frey) Schaefer. Paul was a 1963 graduate of Romeo High School where he met his wife Barbara of 63 years They shared many memories together, traveling and raising their family. Paul served in the army during the Vietnam war, where he earned The Army Commendation Medal.
Paul worked for The Detroit Edison Company for 38 years as an overhead Lineman, where he was well respected and earned his nickname "The Judge", He was proud of his Catholic Faith, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council #6865}.Paul had many hobbies, Fishing, golfing, hunting, and playing cards with friends. His perfect day would be Fishing in the morning, Golfing in the afternoon, and cards in the evening. Paul also enjoyed baking, his chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies were amazing. Paul's true passion was his love for his family; he was their "Rock". He was always present never, taking a day off from being a Husband, Dad or PaPa.
Paul is survived by his wife Barbara,children Paul (Frances) Schaefer of Sterling Heights, Steven (Kimberly) Schaefer,of Clinton Township, Laurie (Dave) Keown of Clinton Township, Siblings Shirley Schmidt, Joanna Poupard, Brother in-law Donald (Lori) Schadelwald,Sister in-law Darlene Schadewald, Grand Children Trevor(Ashleigh) Bauman, Delayney Schaefer, Addison Schaefer, Mason, Maguire, McKenzie Palicke, and great grandchildren Ryleigh and Leighton. He was predeceased by his son Mark, parents Joseph and Delores, Brother Jim, Sister Donna, Brother in-law Hazen Schmidt, and Albert Schadewald
Funeral services will take place on Friday, August 7, 2026 at 9:30 AM at St. Blasé Catholic Church (12151 15 Mile Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48312). Visitation will take place from 9:00-9:30 at the church. Visitation at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home will be on Thursday August 6. 2026 from 3 to 8 PM. Burial will take place at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Washington Twp., MI (28 Mile Road and Mt. Vernon).
